Plan the Perfect Labor Day Weekend in Aspen Colorado

Labor Day Weekend typically signals the end of summer, with school back in session and vacation days over. But in Aspen, this family-friendly, long weekend signals the start to Aspen's most spectacular season (fall) and a final flurry of summer events and festivals. Town is abuzz with early leaf-peepers, live music, spectator sports, and outdoor activities that keep locals and visitors very entertained!

Music in Aspen over Labor Day Weekend

One of Colorado's greatest live music events takes place every Labor Day Weekend right here in the Roaring Fork Valley. Founded in 1991, Jazz Aspen Snowmass Labor Day Festival is a nonprofit dedicated to the preservation, performance, and teaching of jazz and related forms of music and over three decades it has grown into one of the most celebrated outdoor music festivals in the country. Past headliners have included BB King, Bob Dylan, Santana, Sheryl Crow, Diana Krall, and Harry Connick Jr.

The Labor Day Experience is a 3-day open-air celebration of popular, R&B, rock, funk, blues, world, and soul music set against the spectacular Elk Mountain Range at Snowmass Town Park. Passes sell out every year — visit jazzaspensnowmass.org for the current lineup and tickets.

The final Bluegrass Sunday atop Aspen Mountain is held over Labor Day Weekend, with the Smuggler Mountain Boys taking the stage at 3 p.m. Don't miss this low-key event if you love beautiful settings and spirited, live music!

Spectator Sports in Aspen over Labor Day

Aspen may not be the first place that comes to mind for beach volleyball, but every Labor Day Weekend it transforms into one of the sport's premier destinations. The MotherLode Volleyball Classic is one of the most popular beach doubles volleyball tournaments in the country, held on both sand and grass courts across multiple parks in and around Aspen, with upwards of 500 teams descending on the valley each year.

The tournament draws professional athletes and amateur players alike across more than 15 divisions of play, making it accessible to all skill levels while still attracting top-tier talent. Volleyball Magazine has called the MotherLode "the social event of the outdoor volleyball season." Championship matches are held at Koch Park, which also serves as the tournament hub alongside Wagner, Willoughby, and Rio Grande Parks. Food vendors, live energy, and an only-in-Aspen mountain backdrop make it just as fun to watch as it is to play.

Every Labor Day Weekend, Aspen serves as both the finish line and the starting gun for one of the most grueling mountain endurance events in the country. The Grand Traverse is a two-day point-to-point challenge spanning 40 miles of rugged Elk Mountain terrain between Crested Butte and Aspen.

Saturday brings the mountain run, with athletes departing Crested Butte in the pre-dawn hours and pushing across Star Pass and Taylor Pass, climbing nearly 8,000 vertical feet, before finishing at Ajax Park at the base of Aspen Mountain. Sunday flips the course as mountain bikers set off from Ajax Park for the 40-mile return ride back to Crested Butte, ascending 6,800 feet of elevation with a dramatic climb up Aspen Mountain to start. Many competitors tackle both races back-to-back as part of the Grand Traverse Triple Crown, a multi-season endurance challenge that also includes a winter backcountry ski race.

For spectators, Ajax Park is the place to be. Cheer runners across the Saturday finish line or send the bikers off on Sunday morning. Registration fills within hours of opening each year, typically in early December. For current race details and registration visit Crested Butte Nordic.

Outdoor Activities to Enjoy over Labor Day

With the leaves starting to turn their famous golden hue, September is a perfect time for hiking. Depending on weather, the seasonal shift may start earlier or later. Colors first start to change at higher elevations, so it's possible to find golden groves somewhere in the area. Over Labor Day, we recommend our guests head toward hikes up Independence Pass, including Lost Man, the Grottos, and trails around Lincoln Creek.

The Aspen Mountain Gondola is still operating with its summer schedule during Labor Day, and there are both strenuous hikes up Aspen Mountain or more mellow ones at the top, heading out Richmond Ridge. The Maroon Bells offer some of the most stunning views anywhere in the world, and fall is their highlight. The trails in the Maroon Bells Wilderness offer everything from easy to strenuous hiking, but you can always just sit on a bench and take in the sights in stillness and silence.

Road biking is also glorious in the fall. The ride to the Pine Creek Cookhouse up Castle Creek Road is one of the prettiest rides in the valley any time of the year, but fall again is when it shines. If you’re not up for the leg burn, consider renting an E-Bike! These motorized bicycles allow visitors from sea-level to keep up with their altitude-adjusted Aspen friends.

  • Hiking: Kick off your weekend with a hike to the iconic Maroon Bells. The Maroon Lake Scenic Trail is perfect for a leisurely walk with jaw-dropping views, making it a great choice for families or those just looking to enjoy nature without a strenuous climb.
  • Mountain Biking: For thrill-seekers, the Snowmass Bike Park offers trails that cater to all skill levels. Whether you’re a seasoned rider or a beginner, there’s a trail that will get your adrenaline pumping.
  • Fishing: The Roaring Fork River is a hotspot for fly fishing, where you can try your luck at catching trout while surrounded by stunning mountain vistas.
