The events, in depth
JAS June Experience
June 25–28, 2026 | Downtown Aspen | jazzaspensnowmass.org
The June Experience is Jazz Aspen Snowmass at its most intimate. Spread across more than 10 venues — including Belly Up, the Wheeler Opera House, the W Hotel, Limelight Hotel, and Bad Harriet at Hotel Jerome — the festival feels less like a traditional festival and more like a long weekend of great music woven into the town itself.
The 2026 lineup includes Karl Denson's Tiny Universe, The Family Stone, Robert Cray, Cory Henry & The Funk Apostles, Jimmie Vaughan & The Tilt-A-Whirl Band, Tony Monaco, New Orleans Suspects, Acoustic Alchemy, Ally Venable, and Sue Foley, among others. All venues are indoors. Weather won't affect performances, but it will affect your walks between them — bring layers.
Tickets: General admission passes and per-show tickets available at jazzaspensnowmass.org. Note that all tickets are non-refundable.
How far out to plan: The JAS June Experience draws a loyal, repeat audience. Book lodging 3-4 months in advance if you want to be in Aspen proper. The festival recommends booking accommodations early. Rooms fill quickly during festival season.

Aspen Music Festival and School (AMFS)
July 2–August 23, 2026 | Multiple Aspen venues | aspenmusicfestival.com
The Aspen Music Festival and School is the oldest and most storied event on this list. Now in its 77th year, it draws more than 450 young artists from around the world to study and perform alongside faculty from the country's leading orchestras and conservatories. The result is nearly 200 public events across eight weeks — an extraordinary volume of live classical music for a town of Aspen's size.
The 2026 season is titled "For All," marking the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, with a focus on American composers and works that reflect the American musical tradition. Wall Family Music Director Robert Spano leads the Festival Orchestra, with guest artists including Renée Fleming and Thomas Hampson (opening weekend, July 5/11), violinist Leonidas Kavakos, pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet performing Gershwin's Piano Concerto in F (Aug 2), and conductor Stéphane Denève leading Mahler's Symphony No. 1 (Aug 9). The Aspen Opera Theater and VocalARTS program, co-directed by Renée Fleming and Patrick Summers, continues its run with young singers building opera careers.
Family highlights include a Mariachi Celebration (July 2), Film Music Night (July 18), and Beethoven's Fifth Symphony (Aug 12). The Starlight Series brings Broadway to the Klein Music Tent, and 2026 features Guys and Dolls in Concert (July 13-14).
Free options: Many AMFS events are free. Concerts can be enjoyed from the David Karetsky Music Lawn and Kaye Music Garden just outside the Klein Music Tent at no charge. Student spotlight recitals at Pitkin County Library and the Aspen Center for Physics are also free. Children and teens (ages 4–18) pay $10 for most ticketed concerts.
Tickets: aspenmusicfestival.com or 970-925-9042.
How far out to plan: Opening weekend and featured soloists sell out quickly. If Renée Fleming or another marquee name is on your list, book tickets as soon as they go on sale. For general Festival Orchestra concerts, 4-6 weeks is typically sufficient. Book lodging 2-3 months out for July stays.

Debuting this summer, the Mountainside Music Festival is a new addition to Snowmass's event calendar, a three-night free festival on the Fanny Hill stage with openers, headliners, and vendors. Genres will span folk/pop, country, and alternative. Specific artists and dates had not been announced at the time of publication; check gosnowmass.com for updates.
How far out to plan: Free entry. Keep an eye on the Snowmass events calendar for announcement of dates and artists.
Up in the Sky
August 7–8, 2026 | Base of Buttermilk Mountain, Aspen | upintheskyfestival.com
Up in the Sky is Aspen's newest major festival, in just its second year. Produced by Belly Up Aspen in partnership with C3 Presents and held at the base of Buttermilk Mountain, it has found its footing quickly — this year expanding to two stages, nearly double the artists of its inaugural run.
The 2026 edition leans heavily into electronic music, responding to attendee demand from year one. Headliners are DJ/producers John Summit and Dom Dolla. The full lineup includes Empire of the Sun, Parcels, Leon Thomas, Polo & Pan, Passion Pit, Good Neighbours, and more. In a notable new addition, Aspen Music Festival and School students will perform a live orchestral set during the festival — a first for both organizations.
Pitkin County commissioners recently approved a three-year contract for the event, so it's here to stay.
Tickets: 2-day GA from $364. 2-day VIP from $1,096. 2-day Cabin packages (private elevated table for 10, Nobu Signature Cuisine, dedicated VIP host) also available. Layaway plans available with as little as $25 down. Children 8 and under are free with a ticketed adult (limit two per adult). Buy tickets at upintheskyfestival.com.
How far out to plan: GA tickets were still available as of early May 2026, but the festival notes they are selling fast. VIP and Cabin packages move faster. For lodging, book 2-3 months in advance as this event draws visitors from outside the valley, and the August 7-8 weekend overlaps with peak summer demand.
JAS Labor Day Experience
September 4–6, 2026 | Snowmass Town Park | jazzaspensnowmass.org
The JAS Labor Day Experience is the signature event that built Jazz Aspen Snowmass's national reputation. Three days, an outdoor amphitheater in Snowmass Town Park, the Elk Mountain Range as the backdrop, and a cross-genre lineup that brings tens of thousands of people to the valley over Labor Day weekend. Parking note: Snowmass has road closures around Town Park during the event. Use RFTA public transit from Aspen or the Brush Creek Intercept Lot.
2026 lineup:
- Friday, Sept 4: Benson Boone (headliner), Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue
- Saturday, Sept 5: Tim McGraw (headliner), Shaboozey, Avery Anna
- Sunday, Sept 6: Bonnie Raitt (headliner), The Red Clay Strays, Christone "Kingfish" Ingram
Tickets: Early bird 3-day GA passes were available at $348, moving to midway pricing at $399. JAS Deck 3-day passes include afternoon snacks and dinner, complimentary beverages, and access to the private two-story deck structure. Patron (VIP) 3-day passes include the exclusive JAS VIP tent, gourmet dinner, premium open bars, and a substantial tax deduction. Payment plans available with $50 down. Buy tickets at jazzaspensnowmass.org.
How far out to plan: This is the most demand-compressed event on this list. Labor Day weekend in Snowmass is the busiest lodging weekend of the summer. Book lodging 4-6 months in advance if you want to be in Snowmass or Aspen. Nearby towns like Basalt and Carbondale are alternatives if Aspen Snowmass is sold out. JAS passes are also in demand. Buy as soon as the lineup drops in February.
Which event is right for your trip?
- For families with kids: Aspen Music Festival & School — free lawn seating, $10 kids' tickets (ages 4–18), and dedicated family concerts all summer. The Snowmass Free Concert Series is also reliably family-friendly and free every Thursday evening.
- For electronic music fans: Up in the Sky (Aug 7–8) — John Summit, Dom Dolla, Empire of the Sun, and two stages at the base of Buttermilk Mountain.
- For jazz, blues, and soul: The JAS June Experience offers the most intimate setting — multi-venue, multiple shows per night, deep genre variety across 10+ downtown Aspen spots. JAS Labor Day gives you the same organization's bigger outdoor format.

Planning your Aspen Snowmass music trip: lodging advice
Aspen Snowmass is a small destination with limited lodging inventory. That's part of what makes it special, and part of what makes planning important.
- The general rule: For any peak summer weekend (Fourth of July, JAS Labor Day, Up in the Sky), book lodging 4-6 months in advance. For midweek stays or the Snowmass Free Concert Series, 6-8 weeks is usually sufficient.
- Vacation rentals vs. hotels: A vacation rental gives you more space, a kitchen, and the ability to settle into Aspen Snowmass rather than just pass through it. If you're coming for a full week during AMFS, or bringing a group for JAS Labor Day, a vacation rental typically offers better value and more flexibility than a hotel room.
- Location matters: Snowmass-based properties put you walking distance from the Free Concert Series and JAS Labor Day at Town Park. Aspen-based properties put you close to AMFS venues, the Wheeler Opera House, and downtown nightlife at Belly Up. Both are connected by free RFTA bus service — it's a 20-minute ride.
Frias Properties has managed vacation rentals in Aspen and Snowmass since 1974. Browse available properties online or call 970-920-2000.
